Level 2 Frame URR Analysis - 56 Projects

Level 2 Frame Dataset: This analysis includes 56 timber building projects with detailed frame-level data, including URR (Use Renewal Rate) metrics. The dataset covers a range of structural systems, material types, and quality levels.

Level 2 Frame Analysis - Key Metrics:

Understanding the Metrics: This dataset analyzes frame-level data with two key measurement approaches:
Frame Metrics: Total CFA area and WUI for the entire structural frame
Floor Metrics: Typical floor CFA area and WUI (per floor basis)
URR (Use Renewal Rate): Measures material reusability potential - "code" = current compliance, "potential" = theoretical maximum

Key Findings from 56 Projects:

  • URR gap: URR potential (mean 0.594) is nearly 2× URR code (mean 0.306). Maximum gap = 1.650 — substantial unrealised reuse potential across the dataset.
  • Reuse in practice: Only 3 of 56 projects (5%) actively incorporate reused materials. High potential, very low uptake.
  • Material purity: Pure Timber (≥80% BIO vol.) projects have 75% higher WUI than Hybrid systems: 0.298 vs 0.170 m³/m².
  • Quality level: High quality projects show higher WUI (0.257) than Low quality (0.165) — higher-spec timber structures use more wood.
  • Mat-Type spread: All-Timber highest WUI (0.352, n=5), Composite lowest (0.166, n=19).

URR Range: RICS B4 to Potential - Superstructure

Each bar shows the Use Renewal Rate range from current RICS B4 rates (left) to theoretical potential (right). Bar colour indicates bio-based volume percentage (green = high BIO, yellow/red = low BIO).

Compare WUI Across Categories

This chart shows mean Wood Usage Intensity (WUI) grouped by different categorical variables. Longer bars indicate higher timber intensity per square meter.

WUI Frame Distribution

This histogram shows how WUI-Frame values are distributed across all projects. The distribution ranges from 0.010 to 0.480, with most projects between 0.10–0.35. The mean (green line) and median (red line) help identify central tendencies in frame-level timber usage intensity.

Mat-Type × Material Purity Matrix

This heatmap reveals the interaction between countries and material purity (Pure Timber ≥80% BIO Vol.% vs Hybrid Systems). Cell color shows WUI values (green=lower, red=higher), and circle size indicates number of projects in that combination. This helps identify which countries favor pure timber vs hybrid approaches and their respective WUI impacts.

Relationship Explorer

Explore relationships between different variables. Choose between Frame metrics (total structural frame) or Floor metrics (typical floor). Color coding shows WUI efficiency zones. URR metrics show current and potential reusability.
